Upcoming Indie Animation Unveiled
Film Creator: “We’ve tripled the dimensions… against all odds!”
Grand Roach model by Paul Schmitt
Lighting, textures, mapping and pose rigging can go a lo-o-o-ng way.

Things are going well for the Roaches animation production. There are many more tools in the 3d software package that I’m using now than there were just a few years ago. For example, a more well-rounded slider based animation tool set, easier to pre-program Graph Editor and in-scene audio w/wavelength preview for example. I’m also finding that the render engine is much stronger and much more capable of complexity than ever. Good stuff.

As far as this technology has come – it’s still not perfect.

Currently, I’m working out some unique customizations to streamline the animation process with Character Animator Mr. Oliver Simonnet. His portfolio can be found at Oliver Simonnet 3D. Take some time to look at his reel! As you are about to learn – he is very good at what he does.

Are you a 3d Animator with a strong character animation and texture mapping reel? We are always looking for more help. Lip synch animators and architectural modelers especially. Send your demo reels to the Project Coordinator by email.

Short Challenges Animation World To Think Small
Film Director: “As long as it’s funnier than Robot Chicken – we have a winner.”

This 3d view of the Grand Roach clearly displays this bug’s superior intellect and lofty stature.

People, we have a production crew. I am very pleased to announce this and that the initial stages for animation production began this week. We have gained a new animator and are breaking ground on the film now.

Stay tuned to the blog for clips, tests and promos from this upcoming animated short film. You guys will only see this stuff here before it goes out to Facebook, Youtube and film fests.

Bitchzilla/Chauvinism

13 Mar

Comic Pages Released To Stunned Internet Browsing World
Leading Critics: “This is clearly the work of a deranged mind.”
Bitchjira!

These two pages are non-consecutive in the book and in the webcomic but they each deal with female roaches spazzing out. Spazzing out really hard, too. It’s interesting that one character, Bitchzilla attacks unprovoked, while the Molecular Biologist bug in “Chauvinism” attacks for very good reason after she is jeered and nearly set upon by two guffawing morons.

Chauvinism v. Jiu Jitsu

These two pages are great examples of the art style being implemented for the second edition of the Roaches webcomic. Please continue to subscribe to the site with Blogger and Feedburner for more comics and cartoons. As long as you are viewing and subscribing I will be making ’em.

V-Day Art Show

7 Mar

Winter Art Show Features 10 Artists, 2 Bands and 1 Cartoonist.
Local Cartoonist: “They are kind of like evil versions of Smurfs.”

This event video courtesy of RAW Indianapolis.

February was great. Fantastic. Right up there with the second coming and blood blisters. First, I was hired and fired on the same day at a new job. This job, I had only very reluctantly accepted in the first place. I was fired due to a series of paperwork errors that my one-time employer had made. Namely, deleting my resume, my work history and failing to provide accurate information to their own screening service.

Next, another company tried to steal interactive/animation work from me under the guise of a “test” for potential employment. This company, who never paid me a dime, flew into a rage when instead of getting source files, code and graphics that I’d spent a week working on as a “test”, received a secured preview file. Shortly after demanding my work files, this company abruptly switched tones to inform me that they were going with another “more suitable” candidate – meaning they were unable to steal from me properly and were fairly outraged about it.

This level of on-the-job incompetence and unethical behavior, i.e. theft, is too typical for freelance Graphic Designers to immediately encounter with regard to employers.

Putting this aside for a moment – the best thing that happened during February was RAW. Before the show, I drank a bunch of coffee with some cool people I met at a nearby coffeehouse. Then, I met two or three really cute girls (hubba hubba) at the show. My friends’ band, The Chicago Typewriters who are also from my part of the state, were clearly the best act there.

February 14th turned out to be a great night in the middle of a harsh month.

The Second Coming of Roach(es)

25 Feb

Underground Comic Returns From The Grave In A Second Edition
Publisher to world: “If we don’t fund this childish drivel – the competition will.”
Roaches Schmitt Comic

It’s hard to admit but I have learned many, many lessons since I first published this book as a webcomic. The first one was that not everyone is a fan of low brow, underground comics. Go figure.

To illustrate this point: there are 1,000 Sonic and Nintendo based webcomics and only one about cockroaches. This also supports the second thing I learned since 2010: people do not like originality.

All kidding aside, the most important thing I learned is that people will give you the benefit of the doubt in order to improve your craft. This includes all the good folks who have stopped by my table at cons, comic shop management who took a chance on my book, record store owners who gave me the time of day and other artists who talked shop about art and marketing. This last part helped me develop a crumby webcomic into a better book.

Please subscribe, “like” and “plus” the posts you see here so that I can continue to grow while showing you guys my current work. Your support as an audience and as fans of underground comics has taken me this far – it’s much appreciated!

Ampulex Attack!

18 Feb

The Most Important Comic Book Ever Published Just Got More Important-er
Artist to world: “I have been to the mountaintop. It is covered in bugs.”
Roaches Schmitt Comic

Ampulex Wasp are the natural predator of cock-o-roaches in the wild. These insects only can survive in warm climates such as southeast Asia and Africa. The Ampulex can’t keep the roach population under control and many varieties of roaches have sprung up in cold climates in America, Germany and in the mountainous regions of Japan.

Grand Roach

31 Jan

A lip synch motion test made in Flash for the Grand Roach.

Do you want to know something? I need a new computer. The one I have renders Quicktime files from the Jurassic Era. How do I know this? Because the compressors are so badly out-dated that no matter how well I animate something (which is debatable) the compressors end up destroying the timing for each syllable.

To clue you in on the “vintage” nature of my Apple G4: I bought it at the end of the 20th century on eBay. Since then, it has been a print and graphic design work-horse but is not cut out for more complex things like, say, rendering an 8-second HD clip in After Effects or Flash.

More good news. The one reliable guy I trusted to buy computers and parts from has either changed his business number or has gone out of business entirely. Un-flipping believable.

So a new Apple, an iMac if I can swing it, is in the cards for 2013. Which actually is probably the real good news here. Stick around, players…

Snail Riders

29 Jan

An early motion test made in After Effects for the snail riders.

Roaches don’t have an auto industry but they are ingenious improvisers. There have been many good suggestions that I more fully explore the world of these bugs themselves without humanizing them so thoroughly in regular type human cities. And that is a really good suggestion.

The problem with me not taking it up sooner is because of many, many perfectly valid delays and also lame excuses. There are also some more factions within the Roach culture that I have discovered. Secretive orders and clans that keep the pontificating boob that we know and love, The Grand Roach, in power, are starting to get more fleshed out.

Stay tuned for more tests including some of the main dialogue for the first Roaches short.

Roaches Storyboards

15 Jan

An early look at the first Roaches animation with the voice-over and some sound effects work added in.

The first few parts of the animation production are nearly completed. The 20-30 storyboard panels are synced up within an “animatic”. This rough animation shows the story and the general timing for this animated short.

And I mean short. It’s four minutes total but that is still pretty ambitious for a small production company.

The performance by the voice actor Julian Mulock, who plays the Grand Roach, is really excellent! His acting skills go a very, very long way selling these “cutesy” bugs and absurd nature of the short itself. I mean, how many bugs go to war anyway? Not a lot I imagine.

In few more weeks I’ll have the next steps done. Next, I’m replacing enough art to post another animatic. Please, if you like this direction then “like” and “thumbs up” this Youtube clip.
