Webcomic Headed Into Second Edition
Full-color pages, new fonts build on the style of first book.
Roaches Death Comic Page

This new page concerns dead roaches and why they always end up belly up. Why is that? Does gravity effects cockroaches differently than it does people?

Please subscribe to this comic for more pages and looks ahead at the cartoon. As long as you kind folks are viewing and subscribing – I will be keep updating this blog with preview pages for the next edition of the Roaches title and more.

Nature’s Perfect Survivor

Upcoming Indie Animation Unveiled
Film Creator: “We’ve tripled the dimensions… against all odds!”
Grand Roach model by Paul Schmitt
Lighting, textures, mapping and pose rigging can go a lo-o-o-ng way.

Things are going well for the Roaches animation production. There are many more tools in the 3d software package that I’m using now than there were just a few years ago. For example, a more well-rounded slider based animation tool set, easier to pre-program Graph Editor and in-scene audio w/wavelength preview for example. I’m also finding that the render engine is much stronger and much more capable of complexity than ever. Good stuff.

As far as this technology has come – it’s still not perfect.

Currently, I’m working out some unique customizations to streamline the animation process with Character Animator Mr. Oliver Simonnet. His portfolio can be found at Oliver Simonnet 3D. Take some time to look at his reel! As you are about to learn – he is very good at what he does.

Are you a 3d Animator with a strong character animation and texture mapping reel? We are always looking for more help. Lip synch animators and architectural modelers especially. Send your demo reels to the Project Coordinator by email.

Bitchzilla/Chauvinism

13 Mar

Comic Pages Released To Stunned Internet Browsing World
Leading Critics: “This is clearly the work of a deranged mind.”
Bitchjira!

These two pages are non-consecutive in the book and in the webcomic but they each deal with female roaches spazzing out. Spazzing out really hard, too. It’s interesting that one character, Bitchzilla attacks unprovoked, while the Molecular Biologist bug in “Chauvinism” attacks for very good reason after she is jeered and nearly set upon by two guffawing morons.

Chauvinism v. Jiu Jitsu

These two pages are great examples of the art style being implemented for the second edition of the Roaches webcomic. Please continue to subscribe to the site with Blogger and Feedburner for more comics and cartoons. As long as you are viewing and subscribing I will be making ’em.

The Second Coming of Roach(es)

Underground Comic Returns From The Grave In A Second Edition
Publisher to world: “If we don’t fund this childish drivel – the competition will.”
Roaches Schmitt Comic

It’s hard to admit but I have learned many, many lessons since I first published this book as a webcomic. The first one was that not everyone is a fan of low brow, underground comics. Go figure.

To illustrate this point: there are 1,000 Sonic and Nintendo based webcomics and only one about cockroaches. This also supports the second thing I learned since 2010: people do not like originality.

All kidding aside, the most important thing I learned is that people will give you the benefit of the doubt in order to improve your craft. This includes all the good folks who have stopped by my table at cons, comic shop management who took a chance on my book, record store owners who gave me the time of day and other artists who talked shop about art and marketing. This last part helped me develop a crumby webcomic into a better book.

Please subscribe, “like” and “plus” the posts you see here so that I can continue to grow while showing you guys my current work. Your support as an audience and as fans of underground comics has taken me this far – it’s much appreciated!

The Great War

7 Jan

Roaches by Paul Schmitt
A character sheet for retro-roach soldiers from the up-coming Roaches short.

The New Year is here and with it the anniversary of Roaches. It was just over two years ago this winter when I started this title. Way back in the winter of 2010. In the beginning it was just a few gags scratched out in a sketchbook. I remember being on a wicked caffeine high in this little coffee shop in Ohio and taking a break from fighting a mean infestation of real-life roaches that were in my apt. building.

I showed the bits to a few people who, much to my surprise, really enjoyed it. So, I took up my first webcomic right there and then.

Since then, the zany Roaches found an audience on-line, a book has gotten published, it’s toured a few cons and now a short is in production. This little title has gotten all grown up!

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more mischief.

Master Roach

7 Oct

Roaches Schmitt Webcomic
Master Roach ponders the imponderables atop the mystical Mount Frigidaire.

The new and updated art style for these mean little buggers is complete. They have gone from “rubber-tube” arms to segmented joints. The eyes are still Lil’ Orphan Annie – a personal preference because creepy stuff like that is hilarious to me. Also, I’ve taken to shading these dudes.

There is more updated artwork in the Animated section of this blog that shows much more of the new roach designs in a 360 turn-around format. The arm and leg segments, claws, wings and antennae are much more detailed in this new version of the art.

Now, a look at the “classic” underground comics style of Roaches from the book…

Reddick’s Roach

25 Sep
David Reddick Legend Bill Drawing Art

David Reddick’s take on Roaches is the perfect combination of hilarious and scummy.

Nationally published editorial cartoonist David Reddick (Legend Of Bill, Red Shirts RPG) spotted my book in a local comic shop and thought that the concept of roach with an inferiority complex was pretty funny.

So funny in fact that Reddick generously sent me a sketch of the Grand Roach character in the outrageous and irreverent “Reddick” style. It’s the perfect combination of hilarious and scummy. I love it. Many thanks to David Reddick.

ASH Con August

ASH Con August was another very well-attended event with nearly 700 attendees coming in during Sunday morning and early afternoon.

There were over a half a dozen indie title creators that I spoke with. All of them were even kind enough to let me get a quick photo and their web site information. Among the were Sterling Clark, who has worked with Sal Buscema, from Studio S in Kokomo, IN., Rodney Fyke from Hazzum in Cincinnati, OH., Marc Fishman and Matt Wright from Unshaven Comics in Chicago, IL., and Production Director at Panetheon Willie Peppers from Louisville, KY.

The guys from The Black Rose, Aaron Minier and Chris Anrnt were there as well as Mike Graves from BRIDGE Collective in Indianapolis, IN.

The show was a lot of fun. I managed to sign a few books and speak with a lot of comic people. There was even an extraordinary amount of cute chicks at this show. Probably the best show I’ve done all year.

Humoring Others/Paranoia

25 Apr

White Elephants are what all solid relationships are made outta.

Sometimes the best way to solve a problem is by creating many, many, many more problems. Like: telling someone their shoe is untied every 2.5 minutes for 7 years. That would solve everything right?

Paranoia - Life's way of telling you need to be extra quiet from now on.

Paranoia. Life’s way of telling you that you need to be extra, extra quiet from now on. Make that forever.
